Facebook eyes up solar-powered drones, to blanket the world with internet access

Facebook, with the thinly veiled veneer of “bringing internet access to the underconnected,” is looking to acquire Titan Aerospace — an American maker of high-altitude UAVs (drones). The idea is that these Titan drones would be used to connect the 5 billion or so people who don’t yet have reliable internet access — a philanthropic act on the face of it, but when you consider that Facebook’s entire business model is predicated on continued growth, and that almost everyone in the world with an internet connection already has a Facebook account, you can see that this is more about self-preservation than humanitarianism.

Titan Aerospace has two products, the Solara 50 and Solara 60, which the company refers to as “atmospheric satellites.” They seem to be functionally identical, except the Solara 60 can carry a larger payload. Both aircraft are powered by a large number of solar cells, allowing them to ascend to 65,000 feet (almost 20 kilometers), and then circle over a specific region for up to five years (presumably that’s the lifetime of the on-board lithium-ion batteries, which are required for night-time operation). The high altitude is important: The FAA only regulates airspace up to 60,000 feet — above that, pretty much anything goes.

Once these atmospheric satellites are up there, there’s a wide range of possible applications. Facebook is obviously interested in internet connectivity, but mapping, meteorology, global positioning, rapid response to disasters and wildfires, and a whole slew of other scientific and military applications are also possible.  

As for what level of connectivity Facebook hopes to provide with these drones, it’s too early to say. TechCrunch reports that Facebook, which is looking to acquire Titan for $60 million, would launch 11,000 Solara 60 drones. Their coverage would begin with Africa, and then spread out from there. There’s no word on how fast these connections might be, nor how much such a connection would cost the end user. Perhaps more importantly, there’s also no word on how Facebook intends to connect these 11,000 satellites to the internet. Facebook will need to build a lot of ground stations, perhaps in very remote and very hard to administer areas, and then run fiber to hook them up to the internet. And yes, in case you were wondering, this effort appears to be very similar to Google’s Project Loon — which is essentially the same thing, but using big balloons instead of winged aircraft.

It’s worth pointing out that Titan hasn’t yet produced a commercial UAV. “Technology demonstrations” have been flown (probably much smaller prototypes), and “initial commercial operations” will start sometime in 2015. Perhaps this is why Facebook is only paying $60 million for Titan, rather than the $19 billion it paid for WhatsApp.

While bringing internet access to the underconnected masses is really quite a noble undertaking, don’t ever mistake this for an altruistic act. One of Facebook’s most pressing problems is how to grow its user base. Almost everyone who has an internet connection already has a Facebook account (or uses one of its national competitors, like Russia’s VKontakte). If Facebook doesn’t continue to grow, and doesn’t miraculously stumble across some way to make more money (its ads aren’t doing very well), the stock market will react very poorly indeed. Facebook is almost a victim of its own success — it got so big so quickly that it’s virtually impossible to continue the same growth trajectory. Acquiring Instagram and WhatsApp were a savvy moves to bring in a few hundred million more users, but ultimately they were nothing more than stopgap measures. Bringing the next billion users online and into Facebook’s gribbly mandibles will be a very hard task indeed

if you guys are watching a Korean or especially a Japanese or some other any language movies u cant understand no need to be panic.

just follow these steps:-

step1:-

1st download vl sub extention.you can download it from here

step2:-

• now open the downloaded file
• open the zipped file useing any unzipper software.
• in the unzipped folder you can see these file which are shown below

• copy the VLsub.lau file to the below mentioned folder in program files

C:\>Program files\videolan\vlc\lu

(where c is the drive where my program files are stored if u r haveing in e then goto eor what ever it is)

now make a new folder on extensions name.

Now just paste vlsub.lua extension file to this folder

step3:-

 You are almost done, now I am going to show you how to use it. 

To use this extension just open any video using VLC player. 

Now click on VIEW option. 

there you will see the extension name i.e VLsub.

 Just click on that to search movie's subtitles.

So Lets Get It Started,What Do You Need :

So That You Don't Get Confused :

We have divided the "convert-to-jarvis" mission into 3 Divisions :

- Training The Windows Speech Recognition Program.

- Setting Up The Windows Speech Macros.

- Setting Up The J.A.R.V.I.S Interface.

Step One : Train Your Windows Speech Recognition Program : 5 Minutes :

Yeah I Know, A Basic Step, But The Most Important part of "convert-to-jarvis" mission, what you gotta do is fire up thewindows speech recognition program, which comes pre-installed with the Windows, way to access it is via start bar. Now choose the required Fields,and after it is done, visit the  "Train your computer to better understand you" section, it is not necessary for people with clear voice/accent, but I strongly advise you to spend at least 5 Minutes on this so your computer can understand you better.

Step Two : Setting Up The Windows Speech Recognition Macros : 5 Minutes :

Now if you Have set-up-ed the Windows Speech Recog Program, you would have been trying out all sorts of cool commands, But now to spice it up, We'll use the Windows Speech Macros.I assume you would have already downloaded it from the link above and installed it.After Installing it i would advise you to put its shortcuts in two places, One in the desktop and other in the start-up folder, so it would start the second your computer boots up.So a little walk through to this software, This is a super-cool, little software that teaches your computer to talk to you interactively.Here is how to set up the commands :
Double Click The Macros Icon, and when the window pops up asking "What should the macro do?" click "Advanced." For those of you familiar with creating websites, this should be a welcome site. WSRM uses XML for commands... which makes creating custom commands relatively simple. For those of you who aren't aware of XML, it's still easy.Here Is A Little Sypnosis at what are you looking at :

<speechMacros> - This is the starting Tag, it just tells the computer that this XML file uses the Speech Macros to execute.

<command> - This is the command to be executed. Each command is basically one action... in most cases you will only need one, but for some automations you'll want to include more than one. You'll see an example of this later.

<listenFor></listenFor> - This tells the computer what word or phrase to listen for in order to do an action. Notice that there is a closing tag (</listenFor>), this tells the XML that this spot in the code is where to stop doing whatever function... in this case stop listening for a word or phrase once the computer hears it.

</command> - The closing tag for the "Command" tag... again, in XML every tag will have an opening/closing tag and what happens between the two is how it knows what to execute. In this case it knows that the command is finished once the word/phrase has been detected.

</speechMacros> - By now I think you can figure out why this is here.

Since I'm going to name my computer Jarvis, I'm going to tell my computer to listen for it's name by changing the <listenFor> tags to say the following :   <listenFor>Jarvis</listenFor>

After that we will need to pimp up the start of windows, to do that we will download this little utility called Bootchanger, and getting a boot screen animation of your choice form here, then you are done.
